What is FengShui?

"a tool that helps us to identify and improve the Environmental Energy by selecting a suitable Location and adopting the appropriate Direction, Layout and Design of a specific Space for a given Time period for the well-being of the occupants of the Space"

note: the content here focuses on yang Feng Shui - place that we live, work/study/play...; yin Feng Shui is Feng Shui for the deceased

Introduction

According to Quantum Physics, the entire universe is made up of Energy (氣).

There is Energy above us, around us and within us. The Chinese study of the Energy around us is known as Feng Shui (風水). When this Energy supports/empowers us, we say it is "favourable Feng Shui", on the contrary, it is "unfavourable Feng Shui".

The Feng Shui of a place must be considered at 2 broad levels:

  1. Energy (理/氣 - Formless); and
  2. Form (形).

Key Factors

  1. Energy Level (氣) - Time and Space

The 2 key factors that directly affect the Energy level is - Time (時) & Space (空) .

    Example:

    • the watermelon in summer tasted better then those in winter (different season - Time) even they are planted in the same location (same Space)
    • similarly, certain watermelon taste better when planted in certain location (different Space) even when planted in the same season (same Time)

While, there are lots of intricate formulas under the consideration of Space, they can be summarized into: Location (位); and Direction (向).

Location can be at the level of continent, country, plot of land to a sector within a room. Direction is the facing of an enclosed space (complex, building, unit, room, etc). In another words, Energy can be changed by shifting either the Location or staying in the same Location and re-orientate to a different Direction (facing).

  2. Form Level (形)

The type, shape, layout, size, colour, etc. of different objects can directly affect (e.g. support, reduce) the Energy within and around a Space. These objects can be classified as:

    • Natural (先天)/Man-made (後天) - e.g. natural rivers (Natural), roads (Man-made); natural mountains (Natural), buildings (Man-made)
    • Internal (內)/External (外) - e.g. layout within a house (Internal), the formation/shape of the mountain outside the house (External)

Feng Shui Analysis

A place (in this case, referred to a complex, building, house, etc.) with favourable Feng Shui should have:

  • favourable Energy in the surrounding; and
  • this favourable Energy can be brought in via auspicious openings (e.g. doors, windows) and is circulated, enhanced within the Place

To comply with the above requirements, it is important to:

  • incorporate influencing factors at the Energy and Form level;
  • understand what can be changed and what cannot be changed
  • apply the Feng Shui techniques/tools to work on what can be changed to obtain the optimum Feng Shui result

In summary, it is about first considering the influential Factors at the Energy and Form level (理形兼察), then apply the Feng Shui practises and tools on those areas that can be changed so as to improve the quality of the Energy around and within the Place.

Note: what can be changed will depend on at which stage/phase the Feng Shui consultation is involved (e.g. if the site has been selected then the focus will be on other changeable factors, etc.)

Classical Xuan Kong Feng Shui

In Xuan Learning, the Feng Shui methodology we use, is the Classical Xuan Kong Feng Shui, which:

  • has more than 2000 years of history (one of the most researched, tested, comprehensive, applied and effective Feng Shui practises in history) - some of the classical Xuan Kong Feng Shui books include: 青襄经 Qing Nang Jing, 青襄序 Qing Nang Xu, 青襄奥语 Qing Nang Ao Yu, 天玉经 Tian Yu Jing, 都天宝照经 Dou Tian Bao Zhao Jing
  • was originally used within the imperial circles (used to be a well kept secret due to its power)
  • incorporates both at the Energy (Xuan represents Time and Kong represents Space) and the Form levels

Note: Flying Star Feng Shui is a sub-set of Classical Xuan Kong Feng Shui

Xuan Kong Feng Shui uses the following 3 key formulas to directly improve the Energy level of the Feng Shui:

  1. "Pai Long" (排龍) - to understand how the external energy consolidation (e.g. the selected traffic junction) will impact the place (usually apply to landed property and shops/houses on ground floor) from the long term perspective
  2. "Star Chart" (星盤) - to understand the distribution of the Energy within the Place so as to be able to identify the appropriate action to take or cure to apply for the respective sectors
  3. "Shou San Chu Sha" (收山出煞) - to understand whether the Place is suitable to design with "discharging" or "receiving" layout/formation for long term benefits

When the above formulas are applied with the considerations of the Form factors, it can significantly (with visible results within a short period of time) improve the quality of a Feng Shui by working on areas that could be changed.

Classical Feng Shui do not emphasize on so-called "custom-made auspicious Feng Shui items" since they might not have much impact on the overall Energy quality of a place. Classical Feng Shui focuses on the Location, Direction and the alignment with the External factors to create a strong Feng Shui foundation for the Place. Having a strong Feng Shui foundation is like having a healthy body, where there is no need to rely on medication to "survive".
